Pilots N Paws
Pilots N Paws is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2008 when pilots, horrified by the high euthanization rates in some areas, decided to help homeless pets by transporting them to rescues and adopters, even when those rescues and adopters were far, far away. The pilots involved mostly fly small aircraft seating six people or less (but still plenty of room for some needy pets), but Pilots N Paws is trying to involve pilots of large commercial aircraft as well. The pilots do this free of charge, either taking pets along on flights they already have planned or taking time out to fly special charters just to get pets where they need to go. Pilots N Paws have transported puppies, seniors and everything in between. One pilot reported transporting a pregnant schnauzer who went into labor during her flight. They don’t just transport dogs, but have also helped cats, pot-bellied pigs, and even some reptiles.
Pilots N Paws provides an invaluable service. Some areas of the country are simply overpopulated with pets. This is the case in many southern states where spay and neuter rates are extremely low. In those areas there are lots of homeless pets and few adopters, and as a result euthanization rates are heart-breaking. Pilots N Paws can transport pets from these overpopulated areas where they are very unlikely to find homes to rescues that can help them look for homes and to other parts of the country where there are less homeless pets and many more potential adopters. Without the help of Pilots N Paws, rescue groups would have much more trouble taking in these pets, and they could only do so by running very long, costly, and difficult-to-staff car transports across the country.

Pilots N Paws operates an online message board where pilots can register as potential pet transporters and rescues and others can request transport. Through the site, overpopulated shelters and rescues can make contact each other amd with pilots that can help transport pets between them.
