I fostered a shelter puppy in the month of May. He was an unsocialized, very thin German Shepherd-mix puppy who, it seemed to me, would blossom under the influence of a week or two in a busy but loving home environment. I got more than I bargained on, however, when the puppy first proved to have a poor appetite, then kennel cough, and then developed pneumonia. I spent the better part of the month nursing the poor little guy, including administering subcutaneous fluids and other injections, and scouring grocery stores, health food stores, and pet supply stores for various tempting foods and health-promoting supplements. I learned a lot about caring for a sick dog that month; I also learned a lot about fostering that I wish I had known before I had been tempted to bring home that skinny puppy with the sweet face.

Don't get me wrong; I don't regret a minute of that month (or even, oddly, a dollar of the vet bills that I'll be paying off for a month or two). But I do wish I had been better informed, and better prepared to anticipate some of the month's complications. In this issue, I've shared what I learned I should have known before I brought home a foster dog, in "Fostering Success: How to maximize the joys and minimize the perils of fostering a needy dog or puppy." I interviewed a number of people I know who have fostered, and asked people who describes themselves as "serial fosterers" what people should know before they try the experience. In the process, I heard stories about fostering experiences far more harrowing (and costly!) than mine. But I also heard a common theme, that fostering is one of the most selfless, joyful things you can do: to help a needy, dog or puppy recover his or her health and confidence, and find a loving lifelong home.

I'm no different. I'd do it again in a second! The experience was totally worth the tough parts. The puppy blossomed while he was with my family – my dog, Otto, played a huge role in his education – and we found a perfect home for him, with a wonderful couple who already owns a German Shepherd-mix, and who was looking for another one to complete their family.
