@AGRIAN , αυτα που εγραψα στο ποστ 28 τα "δανειστηκα" απο το βιβλιο του john f. gordon: the staffordshire bull terrier handbook, 2η εκδοση, 1961.
"One decidedly unpleasant feature of the preparation of these Bulldogs for the sport was the deliberate malformation of the dog' s face to enable him to perform his work better. In some cases even the nasal sinews where cut, the flews, or lower lips amputated and even forefaces where pushed back by blocks and metal clamps. These atrocities were commited because it was believed that the "improvements" would allow the dog to breathe easier while maintaining his hold on the bull. The operations were normally effected while the dog was still a puppy, and the horrors accompanying these administrations must have exceded all imagination. As though this was not enough, owners frequently mutilated and scarred the faces and bodies of their dogs to give them an extra "thuggish" appearance compatible with their boastings of the animals' prowess in the bull- ring."
ο tom horner στο βιβλιο του all about the bull terrier, λεει για το βιβλιο του gordon σχετικα με τα bulls: "John Gordon' s book is strong on history and the sporting side. The fighting angle is a good deal emphasized; too much so perharps."
αλλη πηγη παρακατω
αντιγραφω απο το κεφαλαιο the early history, part 1 the beginning του βιβλιου the sixth bull terrier book, υπογραφει ο b. a. kenway, 1988 (αναφερεται στα bulldogs οχι στα μπουλς):
"Jesse' s History of the British Dog published 1866, gives an insight to atrocities of the day by describing how owners, to prove the gameness of the mother of puppies they were selling, would hack off hind quarters whilst her jaws remain locked on an opponent."
στο ιδιο κεφαλαιο παρακατω μιλωντας για τα bull and terriers ή τα bulldogs (δεν ειναι ξεκαθαρο), διαβαζουμε:
"As for the fighting dog, it suffered more than just wounds or death in the pit. Ears, lips, nostrils or any appendage that may give an opponent a hold would often be removed. Contraptions reminiscent of a medieval torture chamber were used to disfigure and mutilate, an ugly dog looked better, a reshaped head would fight better, or so it was thought."
